What is potato starch extraction process?

Starch production is an isolation of starch from plant sources. It takes place in starch plants. Starch industry is a part of food processing which is using starch as a starting material for production of starch derivatives, hydrolysates, dextrins.

The potato starch extraction process comprises the steps such as delivery and unloading potatoes, cleaning, rasping of tubers, potato juice separation, starch extraction, starch milk rafination, dewatering of refined starch milk and starch drying.

1.Delivery and unloading potatoes

Fresh potatoes are delivered to the starch plants via road or rail transport. Unloading of potatoes could be done in two ways:

Coarsely cleaning of potatoes takes place during the transport of potatoes to the scrubber by channel.

3.Rasping of potatoes

Most often the rasping of potato tubers is carried out with a rotary grater. The purpose of this stage is disruption of cell walls, which therefore release the starch.

This allows the recovery full-value protein from juice and reduces the onerousness of water juice as a sludge.

What is cassava starch production ?

Cassava starch production is  primarily by the wet milling of fresh cassava roots . Starch is the main constituent of cassava. About 25% starch may be obtained from mature, good quality tubers.

Fresh cassava tubers are processed during season . Cassava starch production  from fresh cassava roots  can be divided into five main stages: preparation (peeling and washing), rasping/pulping/grating, purification (starch washing), dewatering and drying, and finishing (milling and packaging).

For cassava, the process of cassava starch production is relatively simple as there are only small amounts of secondary substances, such as protein, in the roots. When cassava roots are harvested or selected for starch extraction, age and root quality are critical factors. Cassava roots need to be processed almost immediately after harvest, as the roots are highly perishable and enzymatic processes accelerate deterioration within 1-2 days. A first-rate quality starch can be obtained from cassava using only water, and this makes the processing of cassava starch and flour particularly suitable for developing countries and rural industries.

1. mix wheat flour with water to make dough
2. put water into machine  washing the dough to remove the starch granules.
3. discharge of the washed water and add new clean water
4. repeat 2&3 for 3~ 4 times . Use water washing to remove all the starch granules ,leaving the sticky insoluble gluten as an elastic mass
5  get the final product wet gluten for making gluten food .

The main characteristic of this process: the whole potato starch production plant adopts closed way and spiral flow device，low consumption, high efficiency and good product quality. In the process of starch recovery and purification, no longer use the centrifuge but spiral flow station, so as to avoid the extensive use of the moving parts.

The whole process of potato starch production plant can be divided into the following units:
1 Potato Washing/De-stone Unit

New harvest potatoes from the ground should first dry and sieve to remove the impurities as much as possible, and then stored in daily designated area.

2 Crushing Unit

Potatoes feed rasping machine through screw conveyer. In order to production line not to stop when changing the saw blade, it should install the second rasping machine.

3 Starch Extraction/Fiber Separation Unit

The potato paste after breaking mixed with water then pump into the first level screen, the wet fiber comes down from the first screen is pumped into the second, third and the fourth extraction screen, be sent to the fiber dryer dehydration. Wet residue dry matter content after dehydration is 10-12%

4 Enrichment Unit

Down from extraction process in the first level of cone sieve starch slurry pump into rotary self-cleaning filter. Then starch slurry is concentrated.

5 Desand Unit

Starch milk after concentration is sent to a mixing tank, and then starch can use two levels of de-sander expel sand, the sand collected uses butterfly valve to eject.

6 Refined Unit

At this time the starches with 12-14 level cyclone stand to clean, refined. Refined unit automatic work and is equipped with the necessary instruments. Starch slurry concentration after the refined is 35-40%.

7 Fine Fibre Sieve/Dehydration Unit

Starch slurry in starch jar after refined, and then removes moisture through vacuum filter. The wet starch water content after dehydration is 38—40%.

8 Starch Dry Unit

The product after drying uses high efficiency cyclone to collect, finished products of drying machine use pneumatic conveyor or screw conveyor to cool, cooling dry starch will use two stage cyclone separator collection and screw conveyor sends to the sieving machine, after screening to package warehousing.The whole potato starch production plant completed.
